What Massachusetts requires

  • Servicing portable fire extinguishers takes both a Certificate of Registration for the company (Type 42 for portable extinguishers), with an additional registration for each business location, and a Certificate of Competency for each person doing the work527 CMR 1.00, 1.13.5.1 and Table 1.13.5 ยท Department of Fire Services: Fire Extinguishers
  • Each person servicing portable fire extinguishers holds a Certificate of Competency (Type 46 for portable extinguishers), issued after passing the State Fire Marshal's written examination on state laws, regulations and industry standards, including charging, recharging, servicing, testing and inspecting portables527 CMR 1.00, 1.13.5.1.1, 1.13.5.2 and Table 1.13.5
  • One service tag is attached to each portable fire extinguisher (and to each hydrostatically tested vessel), showing the date, initials and certificate number of the person who conducted the most recent test; the tag's size, content, design and placement are set by the State Fire Marshal527 CMR 1.00, 1.13.5.4.1, 1.13.5.4.3, 1.13.5.4.4
  • The service is done under the company's Certificate of Registration, and before printing service tags the registered firm sends one sample to the State Fire Marshal for approval527 CMR 1.00, 1.13.5.3, 1.13.5.4.2
  • Loss or theft of service tags is reported to the State Fire Marshal and the local police within 72 hours; otherwise the holder is presumed to have done or allowed the work the tags show, and certificates can be suspended for at least two years527 CMR 1.00, 1.13.5.4.7
  • Engineered, pre-engineered and self-service fixed fire suppression systems found out of compliance get a bright orange noncompliance tag with "Noncompliance" in black block letters at least 1/2 inch high, the firm name, registration number, inspection date, the reason, and the inspector's initials and competency number527 CMR 1.00, 1.13.5.4.5, 1.13.5.4.6

Registration and competency

The company holds a Type 42 Certificate of Registration for servicing portable extinguishers, with an additional registration for each business location. Each technician holds a Type 46 Certificate of Competency, issued after passing the State Fire Marshal's written exam.

The service tag

Every portable extinguisher gets one service tag showing the date, initials and certificate number of the person who did the most recent work. The State Fire Marshal sets the tag's design and approves a sample before the firm prints them. Lost or stolen tags are reported to the State Fire Marshal and local police within 72 hours.

Orange noncompliance tags on fixed systems

Fixed suppression systems, such as kitchen hood systems, found out of compliance get a bright orange Noncompliance tag with the firm, registration number, date, reason, and the inspector's initials and competency number.

From the walkthrough to a finished Massachusetts report

Note each unit's location, type and size, serial number and result. ReportDraft puts your Type 42 registration and Type 46 competency numbers in the header and lists every extinguisher, with any problems written up as findings.

Common mistakes

  • Working under one location's registration at a second branch.
  • A tag without the technician's certificate number.
  • Printing tags before the State Fire Marshal approves a sample.
  • Not reporting lost tags within 72 hours.
  • A technician servicing without a Type 46 Certificate of Competency.
