When the Georgia Department of Community Health cites a personal care home or other licensed facility for rule violations, the facility has 10 days from receiving the written report to file a plan of correction. Here is what the plan must say, when it is due, and what happens after, with each rule linked to its official text.

What Georgia requires

The 10-day deadline

The clock starts when the facility receives the written report of inspection, not on the last day of the inspection. An acceptable plan must be in within 10 days. Personal care homes file it as the Department directs, and electronically once the Department provides a website for it.

What each line of the plan says

For every rule cited, the plan states what the facility will do and when: the specific actions it will take promptly to come into compliance, and a date. A plan that restates the finding, or promises to "comply with the rule" without an action and a date, is the most common reason a plan comes back.

Personal care homes must also check that each correction actually worked and change the plan if it did not, so each line should say how the home will monitor it, how often and who checks.

Disagreeing with a finding

The facility may explain or dispute a finding in the plan, with a written statement of its disagreement and the evidence. If the Department agrees, it issues a revised report. If the Department finds the plan unacceptable, the facility gets at least one chance to revise it, and must then carry out the plan the Department accepts.

After the plan is accepted

A personal care home displays its most recent inspection report and plan of correction where it routinely shares information with residents and visitors. If it has a website, a prominent link on the main page must give access to all reports and plans from the previous 18 months. Staff must also cooperate with inspections and produce requested documents without unreasonable delay.

Common mistakes

  • Counting the 10 days from the last day of the inspection: the rules count them from the day the written report is received.
  • Writing an action with no completion date, or a date with no action.
  • Naming residents in the plan: use the identifiers the report uses (Resident #1).
  • Forgetting to post the accepted plan in the home and to link 18 months of reports and plans from the website.
