What Georgia requires
- Any portable fire extinguisher required by state or local law, rule or code is installed, inspected, repaired, recharged, serviced or tested only by a properly licensed firm and a permitted technicianGa. Comp. R. & Regs. 120-3-23-.13 (1)
- A new light yellow service record tag, at least 3 by 5 1/2 inches, goes on each extinguisher when it is put into service and each time it is serviced, showing the firm's name, street and mailing address, phone and license number, the technician's name and permit number, the serial number, the service performed, the type of extinguisher, the month and year, and the words "DO NOT REMOVE"Ga. Comp. R. & Regs. 120-3-23-.14 (1), (2)
- The service tag gives the servicing firm's street address and phone numberGa. Comp. R. & Regs. 120-3-23-.14 (2) (b) to (d)
- The technician also notes on each service record tag the agent weight and, as applicable, the hydrostatic test due date for the cylinderGa. Comp. R. & Regs. 120-3-23-.13 (3)
- An extinguisher not maintained under NFPA 10 gets a red non-compliance tag (at least 3 by 5 1/2 inches, attached by wire or plastic retainer, with the reason) that stays until it complies, and the firm forwards a copy of the inspection report on non-compliant or impaired units to the authority having jurisdictionGa. - Six-year maintenance is recorded on a blue metallic self-voiding label and low-pressure hydrostatic tests on a silver metallic self-voiding label, each with the firm, its license, the technician's permit number and initials, the date and its heading, replacing the previous label each time; a verification of service collar goes around the neck each time an extinguisher is opened for internal serviceGa. Comp. R. & Regs. 120-3-23-.14 (4) to (6)
- After each printing of service tags, labels, collars or non-compliance tags, the firm sends at least three samples to the State Fire Marshal's officeGa. Comp. R. & Regs. 120-3-23-.14 (2), (4) to (7)
The light yellow service tag
Each extinguisher gets a new light yellow tag, at least 3 by 5 1/2 inches, when it goes into service and every time it is serviced. The tag shows the firm's name, street and mailing address, phone and license number, the technician's name and permit number, the serial number, the service performed, the type of extinguisher, the month and year, and DO NOT REMOVE. The technician also notes the agent weight and the hydrostatic test due date.
Labels, collars and red tags
Six-year maintenance goes on a blue metallic label and low-pressure hydrostatic tests on a silver one, each with the firm, license, permit number, initials and date. A verification of service collar goes around the neck every time an extinguisher is opened. A unit not maintained under NFPA 10 gets a red non-compliance tag with the reason, and the firm sends a copy of the inspection report to the authority having jurisdiction.
Records and printed tags
Keep inspection, test and maintenance records at the firm's business address for at least two years. After each printing of tags, labels or collars, send at least three samples to the State Fire Marshal's office.
From the walkthrough to a finished Georgia report
Note each unit's serial number, type, service, agent weight and hydrostatic test due date, and anything that needs a red tag. ReportDraft lists them by serial number with your license and permit numbers in the header, ready for the authority having jurisdiction when a unit is non-compliant.
Common mistakes
- A tag without the technician's permit number.
- No agent weight or hydrostatic test due date on the tag.
- Not sending the report on a red-tagged unit to the authority having jurisdiction.
- Recording a six-year service on the hydrostatic test label.
- Forgetting to send sample tags after a new printing.
