Iowa's Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship rewrote its pesticide chapter, 21 IAC 45, effective January 1, 2026; rule 45.26 (3) lists what a commercial applicator's office record holds, and Iowa Code 206.15 sets three years to keep it. Here is each rule with a link to the official text, and what an Iowa pest control service record should hold.

The Iowa office record

Record the licensee's name and license number, the customer's name and address, the date with the time the application began and ended, each product's trade name and EPA registration number, the quantity used, the concentration or rate, the size of the treatment area, and the name and certification number of the certified applicator who made or supervised the application, plus any noncertified applicators who applied under supervision.

Outdoor work adds the temperature and the wind direction and estimated speed. Restricted use work adds the place's address and the site treated.

Three years, copies on request

Keep application records three years from the date of application and hand copies over promptly when the secretary asks in writing. When more than one licensee works a job, or a dealer bills it, each licensee keeps its own set.

Urban signs and licensing

Lawn, park and other outdoor work in a city or developed residential area gets notification signs from the start of the application for at least 24 hours, longer if the label's reentry directions say so. Work inside a building or within six feet of its walls is exempt. Applying pesticides to someone else's property as a business takes a commercial applicator license.

From the truck to a finished Iowa record

Note your start and end times, the area size, each product's quantity and rate, and the weather for outside work. ReportDraft fills each Iowa record item and keeps certified and noncertified applicators apart.

Common mistakes

  • No ending time on the record.
  • Leaving out the size of the treatment area.
  • No wind and temperature for an outdoor perimeter spray.
  • A helper's application with no supervising certified applicator named.
  • Discarding records before three years.
